The Four Cs: Why the Conflict Is the Part You Can't Skip

September 25, 2026

I joined Curtis Davies on the Real English Conversations Podcast, a show for immigrants and international professionals building careers in English. It turned into one of the more useful conversations I've had about why most people's messaging doesn't land.

The mistake almost everyone makes

The biggest mistake I see, and one I made for years, is refusing to lean into the truth of your roots.

I only started telling my own story in the last couple of years. Before that I thought the hard parts were something to hide. Dropping out of college because I was homeless at 18 with no job and no support. The financial mess. I treated all of it as something to be ashamed of.

What I eventually understood is that the mess is the fingerprint. It's the only thing about me that isn't interchangeable with anyone else doing what I do.

Nobody wants to watch the movie where the guy tries something once, is brilliant at it, knocks it out of the park, and rides off into the sunset. It's a pretty picture and it's useless, because it's nowhere near where the audience is standing.

If you're an entrepreneur, at your core you solve a problem. Which means your customers are in the before state. That's the state you came from. Show them where you've been and they'll want to know where you're going. People don't care what you know until they know that you care.

Don't wait until you've made it

Curtis asked whether you need to be out the other side before you share. My honest answer is that believing you do is the thing that stunted my growth.

The fantasy version goes: you struggle, you figure it out, you make the money, you buy the house, and then you tell the triumph story. But documenting the process while you're still in it is more real, more raw, and pulls more people toward you.

People want the blow by blow. There's a reason films run two hours instead of five minutes. Once you see your own ascent as a story being written in real time, every piece of content becomes a scene in it, and your audience gets a front row seat. They start rooting for you. And people buy from people they're rooting for.

The Four Cs

Here's the framework we teach, and you can apply it to a LinkedIn post, a sales page, an email or a sixty-second video.

Context. Set the scene. Where you were, what was happening, what someone needs to know to step into your shoes.

Conflict. The challenge, the obstacle, the mistake, the tension that made you grow. This is the part almost everyone skips, and it's where your credibility is actually built. It's the reason someone thinks: this person knows what they're talking about, because they've been through something.

Clarity. What you learned. Nobody wants a trauma dump and nobody wants to hear that you got beaten down and stayed down. Clarity is the moment of realisation, or the framework you found that changed the game.

Call to action. What you want people to do with what you just gave them. Reflect on it, apply it, or take one specific next step.

Together those give you a story arc with a beginning, a middle and an end. Context creates the connection. Conflict creates credibility. Clarity creates confidence. The call to action creates conversation.

When your story has structure, your message has power.

Systems handle the structure. The soul drives the story.

We also got into AI, which is where a lot of people get nervous about sounding synthetic.

The way I balance it is simple. Automation takes the repeatable, time-consuming work — the funnel flows, the content scheduling — so I stay focused on what a machine can't replicate. The connection, the creativity, the character. AI amplifies my humanity rather than replacing it, because it gives me bandwidth to be more present in the moments that actually matter.

Automation should never make your brand robotic. It should make your humanity consistent. The system keeps the heartbeat steady, but you still have to be the pulse. You drive it. It shouldn't be driving you.

From building businesses to building the builders

The hardest transition most entrepreneurs face is going from the idea person to the person who maintains and scales the thing. We barely talk about it. The one who starts the company often isn't the one whose hands should still be on it later.

Early on I was focused on building businesses. Now I'm focused on building the builders. The legacy isn't the systems, it's the people those systems empower. And moving from founder to example meant learning that leadership isn't about control. It's about clarity and capacity.

One thing for anyone who feels their voice isn't strong enough

Curtis's listeners use English every day at work but often doubt whether their voice is authentic or strong enough to lead a meeting. My advice: lean into your insecurities.

There is nothing more powerful than someone who is self-aware and willing to name the elephant in the room. If you feel self-conscious about your accent or your pronunciation, say so. If people were thinking it, you've let them relax. If they weren't, it costs you nothing. Either way you control the narrative, and naming the thing reads as confidence rather than weakness.

Whatever you're most afraid of about yourself can become a stepping stool into your identity instead of a shadow you're standing in.
